custom mask commission
LOOKING FOR A CUSTOM MARDI GRAS MASK, CARNIVAL MASK, WEDDING keepsake, OR HOME DECOR?
first things first - mask information!
Size & Shape
I have three standard mask sizes - the faces are 7”, 10”, 13” - and the bordering tulle is the same measurement. The image shown is a seven inch mask.
So if you have a seven inch mask face with seven inches of tulle bordering around the circle, the final piece has a diameter of 21” total. Ten inch masks have 30” diameters, and the thirteen inch masks have 39” diameters. Pretty big!
Fortunately, the tulle (which is the circle of fabric bordering the mask) is super lightweight and you can style it like hair to make the piece’s footprint smaller, if you so desire. The masks weigh a few pounds total on the large size, but again, nothing too serious.
The masks also come with an optional black wooden mount that hangs the mask around 4-6” off of the wall. If you prefer to hang it directly on the wall, that’s totally fine. The mask is safe to hang with either method.
I use found objects and donated objects to adorn my masks with. This includes deconstructed costume jewelry, holiday decorations, scrapbooking effects, silverware, you name it. Sometimes I will purchase objects, but this is extremely rare. However, I typically purchase tulle, fabric, and the pearls you see adorning the masks - this is to ensure I always have them available.
What They’re Adorned With
How You and I Work Together
With my recent commissions, I have started asking for a few things from my collectors! If you have any objects that I can try to incorporate, whether personally meaningful or just stuff you enjoy looking at, I would love to give it my best shot. I have also used photos of personally important jewelry and objects as inspiration when making a mask! In other words, if it’s important to you, I would love to hear about it to see if we can work it in.
I also love to hear about any color choices! This can be something as simple as “I love red!” or as complex as “I want a green face, yellow and white tulle, and orange adornments with pink accent adornments.”
In terms of the commissions process itself, we will have those conversations about adornments, color choices, size choices, and so on prior to any payment. Please do not be afraid to ask questions! There’s no such thing as a stupid question, and I am happy to field any you may have. I would much rather you feel comfortable and confident as we progress, rather than increasingly uneasy and confused. I am also happy to speak over the phone or meet in person (I live in the Bywater) if you prefer.
Second part - financial information!
Real Numbers
After all of the variables are agreed upon, I ask a 50% deposit for me to begin physical work on the mask. The other 50% is due upon delivery or handoff. This can be paid using any method you prefer, except for personal check. I have all the pay apps, and will soon have an option on my website to pay through there. I am also open to payment plans, with the understanding that I will not begin work until you have paid the 50% deposit, and you will receive the mask once it is paid in full. Finally, deposits are non-refundable.
Currently, commissioned seven inch masks are $750, ten inch masks are $900, and thirteen inch masks are $1,050. Existing available work is located in the shop for perusal. Buyer pays all shipping and handling, local delivery and/or handoff is free.
Timeframe & Logistics
The turnaround time for completion of your mask can be fairly quick. The reason is that once I receive a deposit, I stop work on any other non-commission pieces and will move directly to begin your piece. Commissions will be completed in the order that they are received. I ask for a month between receiving the deposit and delivery / handoff / shipping of your commissioned piece. I will maintain communication and update you about the progress, as well - no falling off the face of the earth!
My goal is to onboard three commissions at a time in order to make sure I deliver in a timely manner and provide the quality you’re looking for. This means that I will be working more than three at a time at some points as the timelines overlap, but rest assured that my priority is to complete them in the order that they were commissioned and with the same attention to detail.
